India is a developing country, fighting every day to be enlisted among the few first world countries since the independence. Accordingly, since the post independence period, India started concentrating in the infrastructure development first following welfare of the poor, green revolution and so on. In every phases, India adopted new strategies for the development of the country. However after a certain time, India realized that, without the development of the rural poor, every initiative towards the development of the country will be a great failure. Since that, our country changed its strategy of development through right based mode from the welfare mode and taken a lot of curricular to achieve the goal.
Lok Prerna is an organization working for the development of the rural poor in the Jharkhand and West Bengal State as to speed up the development process of the country. Jharkhand comes within the most backward state of our country since the separation from the Bihar with the majority population of the tribe. In the entire development index, Health, Education and Livelihood, Jharkhand ranks in the bottom line. Besides that, this is a state with huge natural resources which is degrading day by day due to the ruthless exploitation by the population. So, here is a huge need to take some effort to conserve the bio-diversity of this state for the development of the state. Accordingly, since the 1992, Lok Prerna is working in the Santhal Pargana Region of Jharkhand and the adjacent district of santhal pargana, i.e., Giridih, for the promotion of health, education and livelihood of the poor, marginal and socially excluded group of people, such as women, tribe, people with disability and so on, in a right based mode by making them aware of their rights and entitlements and giving them alternative source of income. Lok Prerna also mobilizing people for the conservation if bio-diversity through natural resource management. In the state of West Bengal, Lok Prerna is giving effort for the sustainable livelihood development of the poor people through the promotion of agriculture.
After the nineteen years of the organization, Lok Prerna able to reach six Districts, 22 blocks and one municipality, 250 Panchayats and 2772 villages and 23 municipality wards. But, this is just the beginning; still there is a long way to go.
I’m thankful to all of the well wishers of Lok Prerna who gave us time to time guidance to walk on our path. I’m also thankful to all the donors who stretched their supporting hands towards us to walk on our mission. All the government officials, who are continuously supporting us, I can’t overlook to thanks them. The devoted team of Lok Prerna, who are working all the time for the sake of the community development, I’m thankful to them, too. Finally, the community members, for whom we are working, Lok Prerna can’t overlook them as because without their support, any initiatives for their development can not succeed.
In the last, I would like to conclude my letter with the commitment of serving the poor people to ensure their rights in future, too…
